Common Pediatric Dental Conditions Requiring Surgical Intervention
Some of the most common pediatric dental problems that we see that require surgery include the following:
• Baby bottle tooth decay: An all too common dental disorder in young children is what has been termed Baby Bottle Decay. This idea comes from parents giving children bottles and sippy cups with milk and juice that the child then takes to bed with them. Children should not be put to bed with drinks.
• Cavities: Children are in the learning phase of oral hygiene. Along with this phase comes being prone to cavities. There are preventative measures that parents can take, but when prevention is not enough, we can help.
• Extra Teeth: A common problem for children and adolescents is extra teeth, supernumerary teeth or hyperdontia teeth can cause bite issues and shifting that can lead to future problems.
• Dental Infections: Known as odontogenic infections, we can remove the infection, protecting your child from orofacial infection and their overall health.
• Injury to Oral Cavity: Whether playground incident, bicycle incident, falling impact, or more, we can make the restorations needed for proper growth and development.
• Malformed Teeth: Impacted teeth and abnormally shaped teeth can impact the overall dental health of your child.
Oral surgery may be necessary for a number of different reasons. Problems with teeth are common. From congenital issues to injury issues, to hygiene issues, we can assist your child in dental repair and restoration. Oral and maxillofacial abnormalities, including a cleft palate or lip, necessitate immediate surgical correction. Injuries including a broken jaw or a severe impact to the temporomandibular (jaw) joint could result in long-term complications if surgical intervention is not completed timely and appropriately. Issues that are ignored can result in worsening problems with the child’s bite, their ability to chew or swallow, or even with speech.
It is vital to your child’s oral health and their function that their teeth come together properly, that the jaw is properly aligned, can open and close with ease and without pain or clicking, and that there is no exaggerated overbite or underbite.
Corrective jaw surgery can help correct the issues to achieve normal function as your child grows physically and developmentally.
