Dental Sedation for Endodontics

Dental Sedation at Lindsey A. Robinson DDS Pediatric and Endodontic Dentistry Anxiety over dental procedures is something that we at Lindsey A. Robinson DDS Pediatric and Endodontic Dentistry totally understand and sympathize with. It’s a very common issue that many people have a problem with and we will do everything in our power to help you feel comfortable while you visit our practice! During your endodontic treatment with Lindsey A. Robinson DDS Pediatric and Endodontic Dentistry we will always strive to meet your individual needs and comfort levels. For patients who suffer from anxiety, sedation dentistry offers a way to laugh in the face of your fears.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, commonly called laughing gas, is a safe and effective sedative that can reduce your anxiety tremendously. Most people who have experienced the pleasant effects of nitrous oxide report feeling a complete loss of all anxiety and a warm sense of calm that washes over them. Many people also become less inhibited and can find the humor in just about everything, hence the name laughing gas.

Nitrous oxide is administered to you through a mask that is placed over your nose. We pump a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen into the mask between ten and twenty minutes before starting your procedure. This allows some time for the nitrous oxide to take effect in your system. You will be asked to breathe normally through your nose and will start to feel pleasantly lightheaded and perhaps a mild tingling in your extremities. Eventually, you will feel calm and comfortable and ready for your procedure to begin. You will remain awake and able to respond to requests throughout the procedure.

At the end of the procedure, we will change the mixture of gasses being pumped into the mask to include only oxygen, which takes only a few minutes to bring you back to complete sobriety.

Oral (Conscious) Sedation

Oral sedation is another form of conscious sedation that allows you to maintain your awareness of your surroundings and respond to requests. Instead of having a gas administered, we give you a pill to take up to an hour before the procedure starts. Depending on the drug, it can make you a bit drowsy, but you will be able to maintain alertness. Your anxieties will melt away, and you will be ready for whatever procedure that you are having done.

Your Comfort and Safety Is Paramount

We take the safety and comfort of our patients very seriously at Lindsey A. Robinson DDS Pediatric and Endodontic Dentistry. All patients who receive some form of sedation are closely monitored to ensure their safety.

Preparing For Your Appointment

It’s never a bad idea to bring a friend or relative with you who can drive you home and help make you comfortable. Try not to eat or drink too much before your appointment as sometimes nausea can follow sedatives. If you feel dizzy or nauseous following your sedation, please let us know! We are happy to allow you to sit and regain your composure for as long as you need.
