Helping a Child with an Underbite

Underbite Lindsey A. Robinson DDS Pediatric and Endodontic Dentistry CA 95945-7224Many children have a slight overbite in the early stages of their development. However, an underbite (a condition in which the lower teeth protrude too far forward) is a slightly more rare occurrence which can pose serious problems. If left untreated, an underbite can impact the development of the jaw muscles and teeth.

What Can You Do for an Underbite?

We generally recommend a progressive treatment regimen when it comes to an underbite. Starting out, you can frequently treat the condition with braces designed for this specific purpose.

If your child seems to be hesitant to get braces due to their appearance, we can fabricate clear braces that are much more inconspicuous.

Another option is using an orthodontic appliance such as an expander or retainer. In some cases, we may need to use headgear to correct the condition. These appliances are much less comfortable (and much more noticeable) than braces, and we usually only recommend them if braces don't work.

Finally, if nothing else corrects the problem, we may suggest corrective surgery to treat your child's underbite. We usually only suggest this if it is clear that nothing else will work.

We Are Here to Help You and Your Child

Keep in mind that most underbites respond well to treatment and will not require surgery. This is good news for you, and for your child.

If you have any questions about your child's underbite (or any other aspect of his or her orthodontic development) please do not hesitate to pick up the phone and give us a call. Or, if you prefer, jot a note for yourself and then bring it up the next time you visit us for your routine dental appointment.

We are here to help you and your child, and we look forward to seeing your child grow up with teeth that are strong and healthy!
