Tongue Thrusting Lindsey A. Robinson DDS Pediatric and Endodontic Dentistry CA 95945-7224As your child grows and develops, you want to do everything you can to help ensure that he or she develops normally. We often see patients who come see us with questions about particular matters relating to the oral health of their children. One such issue is tongue thrusting.

What is Tongue Thrusting?

Tongue thrusting is the habit of thrusting the tongue either forward or laterally, particularly when your child is speaking or swallowing. This can contribute to speech issues such as a lisp or other speech impediments. It can also, in some cases, lead to the abnormal formation and development of the facial structure.

Keep in mind that the tongue is actually quite strong. In fact, inch for inch, it is the most powerful muscle in the body. As such, when your child thrusts his or her tongue against the teeth, over time this habit can result in the teeth being pushed out of alignment. This can, in turn, cause speech problems, abnormal wear and tear on the teeth, and even TMJ alignment issues.

What Can You Do About Tongue Thrusting?

When we see a pattern of tongue thrusting in a child, we usually try to educate the parent first before suggesting any particular treatment regimen. That being said, there are generally two paths of treatment, and you may opt to utilize one or both of them.

There are certain orthodontic devices that may be used to help prevent tongue thrusting. Worn inside the mouth in a similar manner to a retainer, these devices can help your child learn to stop engaging in tongue thrusting behavior.

In addition, there are certain types of exercises that can be used to help develop normal facial and tongue muscle development and use. The treatment you will use will depend on a number of factors, so please contact us for more information.
