What Makes for a Perfect Teething Ring?

Teething Ring Lindsey A. Robinson DDS Pediatric and Endodontic Dentistry CA 95945-7224
We frequently have our patients ask what is the best teething ring for their child. While teething rings come in all shapes and sizes, there are a few things you should look for if you are wanting the best teething ring.

Shape Matters
We tell our patients to look at the shape of the teething ring. Keeping in mind that your child's mouth is not nearly as large as yours is, consider the likelihood of the ring fitting comfortably in the mouth.

At the same time, it should not be so small as to enable your child to fit too much in at once. Such a teething ring would pose a choking hazard.

Texture
Some teething rings come in smooth textures, while others have some texture such as ridges or small raised bumps on them. Generally speaking, we tell our patients to opt for the smooth texture.

While the textured surface of the other teething rings can help a child who is looking for something to grip with his or her gums, the textures can also pose a problem and could even cut the already tender gum tissue.

Grip
Of course, you want to be sure that your child will be able to adequately grip the teething ring. Remember, it is going to be both cold and wet, so if it is too slippery you could find yourself picking it up off the floor over and over again. Instead, you should opt for something with a good grip on it so your child can handle it better.
